AQ PhD System
PhD Quality Assurance
In order to meet AVA3 requirements, the PhD School of the University of Turin employs a Quality Assurance System, to which the PhD Program refers.
In response to a need that has emerged at the European level and endorsed by both ENQA (European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education) and EQAR (European Quality Assurance Register), ANVUR formulated a Model for the
Periodic Accreditation of Universities, Departments, Courses of Study and Doctoral Programs (AVA 3).
For what concerns doctoral programs, the model focuses on the following elements:
- D.PHD.1 - Structure of the Ph.D. program
- D.PHD.2 - Planning and organization of training and research activities
- D.PHD.3 – Activity monitoring and improvement
PhDs are third-level university programs, and according to the Dublin Descriptors they have the following goals: Knowledge and understanding: Candidates should demonstrate a systematic understanding of a field of study and mastery of the research methods associated with it.
- Applying knowledge and understanding: Candidates should be able to apply their knowledge and understanding in a way that demonstrates a professional approach to work. They should also acquire the appropriate skills to devise and sustain arguments and solve problems in their field of study.
- Autonomy of judgement: Candidates should be able to gather and interpret data (usually within their field of study) that are considered relevant for making independent judgements, including reflection on social, scientific, or ethical issues.
- Communication skills: Candidates should acquire the ability to communicate information, ideas, problems, and solutions to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
- Learning skills: Candidates are expected to develop the learning skills that are necessary to undertake further studies with a high degree of autonomy.
