Game Design and Creative Enterprises for Culture
Game studies intersect practical skills and theoretical knowledge: the Game Design and Creative Enterprises for Culture programme emphasises the link between higher education and the productive sector, designing career opportunities for doctoral students. It aims to attract the best master’s graduates and active game designers interested in consolidating their academic background.
The programme prepares students for game development and production projects in the private and public sectors, including firms, art associations, museums, archives, and foundations. It introduces young scholars to an academic career that combines theory with practical skills and workplace training. Moreover, students are asked to investigate the theory and history of ludic forms, including digital and analogue games, and examine the interrelation between gaming and contemporary creativity, including the gamification processes within museums and exhibitions.
Game studies date back to the eighteenth century, but not until the 1990s did the discipline become institutionalised in the United States and Scandinavia. In recent years, game studies have gained a presence in Italy, and the University of Turin has played a leading role in consolidating the discipline in the academia. In this perspective, the Game Design and Creative Enterprises for Culture programme is unique and not offered anywhere else in the country.
